Russia attempts second attack on Olympics followed by ban on Russian athletes
Russia/Tokyo : Ahead of Tokyo Olympics 2020, Russian hackers are hacking national & international sporting organizations. 16 organizations have been attacked so far with data and operations at risk.
As per a report by Microsoft, the attacks have been identified after World Anti Doping Agency put an indiscriminate ban on Russian athletes participation from international events and Tokyo Olympics. This is the second attempt by Russian hackers. The first came to light during Rio Olympics 2016. The hackers were successful in affecting LIVE broadcast of games.
Spear-phishing, password spraying, exploiting internet-connected devices and the use of both open-source and custom malware have come into radar from the recent reports. State sponsored hackers Strontium are behind the attacks. They are also known as APT28 or Fancy Bears.
In 2018 APT28 released an Olympic Destroyer Malware during 2018 Winter Olympics to affect the functioning of the games. After the identified threats the government is expected to take firm action and a water tight security system to protect Olympics 2020 and sports organisations.
