The much-anticipated final of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 took place at the iconic National Stadium in Karachi on Tuesday, November 17.
In the battle of the two finale debutants, it was the Karachi Kings who trumped past Lahore Qalandars by a margin of five wickets and clinched their maiden PSL title.
Lahore captain Sohail Akhtar won the toss and opted to bat first and could only accumulate 134 runs in their allotted 20 overs. They lost seven wickets in the process.
The Qalandars started brilliantly with the dynamic opening partnership of 68 runs between Tamim Iqbal (35) and Fakhar Zaman (27).
From 68-0, the Qalandars lost half their side, with the score reading at 97-5. Waqas Maqsood (2/18), Umaid Asif (2/18) and Arshad Iqbal (2/26) were instrumental in the Lahore downfall, as they scalped a couple of wickets each.
Chasing a modest total, the Karachi side received an early blow with the wicket of Sharjeel Khan (13) and Alex Hales (11).
However, Pakistan’s batting maestro Babar Azam played a decisive knock at the big stage. Azam steadied the ship for his side with wickets tumbling at the other end. He scored a majestic 63 off 49 deliveries, which included seven boundaries.
Azam weathered the early spells from Haris Rauf (2/30) and Dilbar Hussain (2/28) , who picked up a couple of wickets each. In the end, it turned out to be a comfortable run-chase for the Kings as they achieved the target in 18.4 overs.
Pakistan’s batting sensation, Azam, walked away with the ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Tournament’ title.
Brief Scores:
Karachi Kings – 135/5 in 18.4 overs (Azam 63*, Hussain 2/28) beat Lahore Qalandars – 134/7 in 20 overs (Iqbal 35, Asif 2/28)
