New Zealand board announce squad for West Indies series

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced the squad for the upcoming home series against West Indies, starting November 27.

The West Indies cricket team is scheduled to face off against the Black Caps in a three-match T20I series, followed by a two-game red-ball series.

After decent performances for Wellington Firebirds, Devon Conway has earned his maiden call-up for the white-ball series. 6’ 8” tall, Kyle Jamieson, also earnt his maiden call-up for the T20I series.

Jamieson proved to be impressive during his debut ODI and Test series against India earlier this year. Further, the Black Caps will be devoid of the services of captain Kane Williamson and premium pacer Trent Boult for the T20I series. The two starters have been rested for the T20I series.

Both Williamson and Boult were part of the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. The Kiwi duo had been in a bio-secure bubble for almost three months. In the absence of  Williamson, Tim Southee will be leading the New Zealand side.

New Zealand head coach praised the board’s effort for the resumption of international cricket in the Land of Long White Cloud. The last time Black Caps were in action was during the Chappell-Hadlee series, disrupted due to pandemic outbreak in March.

“I think we’re all very aware and appreciative of how much work has gone in to make this home summer possible – in what is clearly unprecedented times,” Stead stated in a press release.

“The season schedule is complex and for the first time we’re going to have a BLACKCAPS Test squad assembling on the same day we’re playing a T20 International in another city. We’ve got players at quite different stages with some having played almost a month of domestic cricket, some in managed isolation following the IPL and others battling injuries,” he concluded.

Here are the squads:

For T20I

Tim Southee (captain), Hamish Bennett, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Seifert (wicket-keeper), Ross Taylor (Doug Bracewell, Scott Kuggeleijn and Mark Chapman included for game three in place of Jamieson, Southee and Taylor)

For Tests
