With the 7th match kicking off today, the Women’s Cricket World Cup can be seen shining better than ever. India plays its second match against West Indies today.
The first one against England was a clear 35 runs victory and that was a major confidence booster for the Indian team. While the team is seen in the best of its forms, for me the World Cup this time was a packet full of surprises. While the entirely country is undoubtedly obsessed with Virat Kohli and Co., I have always been a secret follower of Mithali Raj who leads the Women’s team fearlessly.
I remember when I was in Class 7th, I dressed up like her on the Character Dressing Day of my school. It was a pleasant surprise to have our captain Mithali Raj reveal her different sides to the public this time and I couldn’t be more proud. Her 7th consecutive fifty definitely made headlines, but we as the fans were more happy to have her reply to the press like a bombshell when asked about her favourite male cricketer. Yes, she was absolutely correct to ask if they ever asked this to any of the male cricketers.
My love for her has multiplied with another episode when she was seen reading in between her practices. An avid reader that she is, she proves how reading can be therapeutic for all people, irrespective of their occupation. She continues to fight for equality and recognition of the women cricketers and little by little, the patriarchal world is surely listening.
