Royal Challengers had registered their first win of the season in their last match vs Kings XI Punjab. Coming into this match they needed a win against Mumbai Indians to stay in the contention to qualify for the playoffs. On the other hand, MI needed a win in front of their home crowd to put their campaign back on track after the loss against Rajasthan Royals.
Earlier in the evening, Rohit Sharma won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first. RCB lost Virat Kohli early but Parthiv Patel made sure that they made full use of the powerplay. After losing the wicket of Patel, AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali took the innings forward.
The pair added 95 runs together as RCB was set to launch an attack in the slog overs. It was not to be the case as Malinga picked four wickets to sniff out RCB’s momentum. ABD kept playing big shots on the other as RCB managed to post a target of 172 for MI.
MI got off to a great start through Rohit Sharma and Parthiv Patel. They looked set to chase the score before Moeen Ali dismissed both openers in a single over. The foundation had been already set, as the middle order completed the job started by the openers.
They faced a bit of jitters but Hardik Pandya played a great innings to take his team home. MI won the match by five wickets with six balls to spare.
